ELK RETURN TO NORTH CAROLINA

It took about 20 years, but elk have returned to the Cataloochee Valley in North Carolina. Once native to the Tar Heel State, eastern elk vanished in the 1800s due to human encroachment on key habitat. However, now, while exact numbers are still to be determined, elk are back in the Great Smoky Mountains in Southern Appalachian, the Citizen Times reports. Wildlife biologist Joseph Yarkovich has been involved with the project since its beginnings and hopes to one day “have one large, contiguous population throughout the East Coast again,” but adds, “that’s still way, way down the road.” For now, those involved with the elk recovery project are hoping to obtain an accurate population count. “What we’ve been doing up until now is conducting a minimum count,” said Yarkovich. “The park in collaboration with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and the North Carolina Wildlife Commission will coordinate for three days in a row to count as many elk as we can see and come up with a minimum estimate for the population.” However, that will be tricky due to the dense forests that span the western part of the state into Tennessee. “Basically, the way you typically survey elk populations is based on western landscapes and methodologies where you have really high sightability,” said Yarkovich. “Those methods really aren’t as effective here in the Southern Appalachians where everything is just so thick.” goHUNT Gear Shop So, they’re looking at a new way of tallying – and tracking – wildlife. “What we’re looking at now is a study using elk fecal DNA,” said Yarkovich. “It consists of walking transects all over Western North Carolina for three years, finding elk pellets, and swabbing them for DNA. Those samples can then be sent off for genetic analyses down to the individual level, which will help us capture records of a lot of the animals that we’re not seeing.” There’s about 400 transects that park officials will study that include miles of off-trail areas. However, while the DNA-based counting system is “labor intensive,” biologists believe the results will be worth it as they will be able to see “detailed information…for a reintroduced population that is still relatively fragile,” according to the Citizen Times. “Twenty years of elk back on the landscape can seem like a really long time, but when you look at the big picture, it’s still not a big population,” said Yarkovich. “Smaller elk populations can be really sensitive to disease, changes in the environment, and changes within their own group dynamics.” If successful at uncovering a piece of the “region’s ecological puzzle,” Yarkovich believes other states will try the method, too. “If this project works as well as we hope, I would expect other states like Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and Pennsylvania to pick it up too,” said Yarkovich. “That’s a big step toward restoring a healthy, self-sustaining herd for Southern Appalachia.”

Wolf season shuts down early in southwestern Montana

Too many Yellowstone wolves have been trapped or killed by hunters during Montana’s wolf season, resulting in a call by wildlife commissioners to shut the season down early in the southwestern portion of the state. To date, 76 wolves have been reported killed. Once that number hits 82, hunting and trapping will be over for the area this season, according to the Associated Press.

In December, Superintendent Cam Sholly asked commissioners to suspend hunting in areas along the park’s borders, stating that “park wolves spend only 5% of their time outside the park.” So far, 23 wolves from Yellowstone packs have been killed – 18 in Montana, three in Wyoming and two in Idaho – sparking park officials to worry that it could mark “a significant setback for the long-term viability” of these packs.

Currently, there are only 91 wolves within the park borders, according to spokesperson Morgan Warthin.

As goHUNT previously reported, the state recently made changes to its wolf trapping and hunting seasons, eliminating quotas and increasing the number of wolf trapping and hunting licenses as well as extending wolf trapping seasons and legalizing the use of snares. However, while Yellowstone officials and wildlife advocates may object to the number of wolves killed so far, Montana officials say that the 184 wolves killed statewide is “in line with recent years.” There are currently over 1,000 wolves in the state.

“We have a statutory obligation to reduce the wolf population,” said Patrick Tabor, vice chair of Montana’s Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission.

However, the Phantom Lake Pack has practically been “eliminated” after the majority of its pack members were killed between October and December, which park officials like nature guide Cara McGary says damages the economic viability of the park since tourists will travel to specifically see the Yellowstone wolves.

“These are the most viewable wolves in the lower 48, if not the world,” said McGary. “The same packs that my clients pay me to see on every wildlife watching tour all year round ... What’s the justification for this damage?”

While the southwestern portion of the state will close to wolf hunting and trapping, Montana intends to run the rest of the season as scheduled. That means wolf season won’t close until March 15.

Stay tuned to goHUNT for further updates.

MTFWP removes mountain lions from Wild Horse Island State Park

Three adult mountain lions were recently removed from Wild Horse Island State Park in Montana. The decision came after the state and tribal officials deemed the animals a “public safety issue due to the high density and habituation,” according to KRTV News.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MTFWP) worked in collaboration with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) after receiving reports from both landowners and visitors. The island, which is 2,163 acres, is located on the south end of Flathead Lake. Both MTFWP and CKST worried that their presence would impact “one of the nation’s most important conservation herds of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep.”

Because of how the island is situated, bighorn sheep have no escape route from the mountain lions.

“Alongside prioritizing public safety, we felt it was important to protect one of the few disease-free bighorn sheep herds because of the role it plays in the greater conservation of the species across North America,” said Neil Anderson, MTFWP regional wildlife manager. “Due to the lack of escape terrain for bighorn sheep and the number of lions on the island, the bighorn population has been reduced to a number we haven’t seen in decades.”

The bighorn sheep herd on Wild Horse Island are considered disease free and healthy – numbering over 560 animals. The herd is used to establish new herds and help others recover with 26 bighorn sheep relocated from the island to the Tendoy Mountains in southwest Montana just last year.

“Mountain lion and other cats, like the bobcat, hold significant cultural importance to Tribal members, and are not hunted within the Flathead Indian Reservation,” said Kari Eneas, CSKT wildlife manager. “Our mountain lion populations are healthy and, in this unique situation, we considered the habituated behavior and density of animals of all wildlife species on the island in our cooperative decision with FWP.”

RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2

DUCK HUNT

FAR CRY
