Huge Zimbabwe Elephant Killed Legally, Says Wildlife Authority Harare: The hunt that killed one of the biggest elephants seen for years in Zimbabwe was legal, the wildlife authority said today. The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) said the elephant which was killed last week in the southeastern part of the country had tusks weighing 54 and 55 kilogrammes respectively adding that proceeds from the hunt would go towards wildlife conservation. "On the 7th of October 2015, an adult male elephant was hunted as a trophy by a foreign client through a locally registered safari company in Malipati Safari area," the ZimParks statement said. It said the area was "allocated sustainable quotas and hunting permits for all wildlife species including elephants on annual basis." Malipati is adjacent to Gonarezhou national park and the two game parks hold 11,452 elephants, ZimParks said, dismissing reports that the elephant hunt took place inside the national park. "Zimbabwe subscribes to the principle of sustainable utilisation of its natural resources, including consumptive and non-consumptive utilisation of wildlife," the statement said. "Wildlife utilisation programmes and projects generate revenue that is used to develop local community areas and contribute to the improvement of living standards of local communities and to support conservation programmes." ZimParks could not name the hunter who killed the elephant or give details how the huge mammal was killed. However, wildlife groups reported that a German hunter paid $60,000 to shoot the huge male elephant, reviving the fierce debate over trophy hunting after the shooting of Cecil the lion. Emmanuel Fundira, chairman of the Safari Operators Association of Zimbabwe (SOAZ) Friday said the elephant was "so huge its tusks were almost hitting the ground while it was standing." He said SOAZ believed that the elephant should have been treated as a "national treasure" rather than killed. The Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force (ZCTF) condemned the elephant hunt. "It's wrong to kill an iconic animal like that," said Johnny Rodrigues, chairman for ZCTF. "The last time one was seen (of such size) was more than 40 years ago. The hunter should not have shot it." Drought impacts mule deer antler growth in Texas Long-term drought has resulted in massive reverberations across the West. In Texas, it has impacted mule deer, particularly herds in the Panhandle and Trans-Pecos areas. With archery season already underway and general season on-deck in a just a couple of weeks, hunters should be aware that, this year, antler growth is below average even though herd health is still holding steady, according to the Texas Farm Bureau. “I would say the chances of bagging a mule deer would probably be average, but the antler production is going to be quite a bit below average just because we didn’t have any moisture during the antler development time,” said Shawn Gray, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) mule deer and pronghorn program leader. Low fawn production is also linked to “timely rains, and its impact on forages.” Currently, the average mule deer fawn crop in the Trans-Pecos and the Panhandle is 30% to 35%, which Gray acknowledges should sustain mule deer populations within the area with the potential for even a bit of growth. “We get lower fawn crops, and so the production of the herd goes down,” said Gray. “I wouldn’t say it’s a historic decline or anything like that. It’s just the product of the current drought, but hopefully we’re going out of that.” Mule deer archery season runs through Nov. 4. General season opens Nov. 19 in the Panhandle and Nov. 25 in the Trans-Pecos and Brewster, Pecos and Terrell counties. Omezení použití LUP v pásmu AMP již jen na naháňkách černé zvěře Změna mimořádných veterinárních opatření týkající se afrického moru prasat na Liberecku K 1.9.2023 upravila Státní veterinární správa (SVS) mimořádná veterinární opatření (MVO) ve vztahu k africkému moru prasat (AMP) na Liberecku. První změna se týká přesunů domácích prasat z oblastí mimo uzavřená pásma do pásem I a II. Doposud platilo, že pro tyto přesuny bylo nutné dopředu získat veterinární osvědčení, až poté bylo možné přesun realizovat. Od nynějška stačí takovýto přesun pouze předem nahlásit Státní veterinární správě prostřednictvím webového formuláře, a to nejméně 48 hodin před přesunem. Tuto povinnost má chovatel v uzavřených pásmech, ke kterému se prasata přemísťují. Důvodem popsané změny je zjednodušení administrativy a také to, že mimo uzavřená pásma platí ve vztahu k AMP dobrá nákazová situace. Povinnost veterinárního osvědčení pro přesuny prasat domácích z uzavřených pásem mimo tato území naopak z důvodu vysokého rizika trvá. Druhá změna MVO se týká zákazu použití psů při společných lovech v uzavřených pásmech. Toto pravidlo se dosud týkalo všech typů lovů, avšak od 1.9.2023 zákaz platí pouze pro společný lov černé zvěře, na lov ostatní zvěře (například pernaté) se již nevztahuje.

Pheasant shoots scaled back across UK after bird flu import bans Pheasant shoots across the UK are being shut down or dramatically scaled back this year because of import bans on the birds after an outbreak of bird flu. A huge number of the gamebirds shot in the country are imported from factory farms in Europe. Experts have said this practice should stop or be reduced because it risks spreading disease and has troubling implications for native nature and biodiversity. Just under 50 million pheasants are usually released each year from continental farms. A recent study suggested that at their peak in August each year, non-native common pheasants and red-legged partridges make up about half of all wild bird biomass in Britain. The annual shooting season begins on 1 October. Jeff Knott, the central and eastern England director at the RSPB, said: “The most important thing from our perspective is the bird flu situation underlines the risks of importing and releasing millions of birds into the British countryside with very little oversight. It is a very, very unregulated industry and it is something that needs to be looked really hard at.” He called for more regulation for shoots. “There are inherent risks with bringing so many birds in, and releasing them into the countryside. There is a need to look at greater regulation of the industry to make sure we are not putting native wildlife at risk. Estates don’t have to report how many they are bringing in, releasing, how many are being shot.” Mark Avery, who co-runs the nature campaign group Wild Justice, said: “This is a wake-up call for shooting. Importing tens of millions of non-native pheasants is hardly traditional or sustainable. The environment will benefit – all those gamebirds harm our native species. Pheasants gobble up snakes and lizards and damage vegetation. Fewer gamebirds is respite for native wildlife.” Shooting estates are putting measures in place including more breeding of the gamebirds on site to make the sector more resilient to import bans.
