The Timeless Tradition of Falconry in the UAE In the heart of the Arabian Peninsula, where the vast desert meets cutting-edge modernity, lies a tradition that has stood the test of time: falconry. Esteemed as both an art and a sport, falconry holds a special place in the cultural heritage of the United Arab Emirates. For centuries, falcons have been revered not just as hunting companions but as symbols of grace, power, and freedom. The UAE's unique landscape, with its sweeping dunes and open skies, provides the perfect backdrop for this ancient practice. Today, falconry is not only a way to connect with nature but also a means to preserve the rich traditions of Emirati culture. Falconry in the UAE is more than just a pastime; it is a celebration of skill and patience. Falconers invest countless hours in training their birds, building a bond of trust and understanding. The annual Falcon Festival showcases this commitment, drawing enthusiasts from around the globe to witness impressive displays of hunting prowess. Moreover, the UAE government actively supports falconry as a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage. This endorsement promotes education and conservation efforts, ensuring that the art of falconry thrives for future generations. Whether you are an avid enthusiast or a curious traveler, experiencing falconry in the UAE offers a glimpse into a bygone era where man and nature coexisted in harmonious partnership. So, the next time you find yourself in this vibrant region, don’t miss the chance to witness the majesty of these incredible birds in action. Join us in celebrating this cherished Emirati tradition—it's a breathtaking journey you'll never forget! 🦅 #Falconry #UAETraditions #CulturalHeritage #Falcons #AdventureAwaits

The Hanoverian Scenthound: A Tracker's Reliable Partner For serious hunters who prioritize accuracy and perseverance above all else, the Hanoverian Scenthound ( Hannoverscher Schweisshund) deserves a close look. This isn't a flashy, multi-purpose breed, but a highly specialized tracking dog bred for one thing: relentlessly pursuing wounded game. Quarry: What a Hanoverian Scenthound Hunts The Hanoverian Scenthound's forte is tracking wounded ungulates. That means deer (primarily red deer, roe deer, and fallow deer), wild boar, and, in some regions, elk or moose. They are not typically used for birds, small game, or predators. Their focus is solely on following the scent trail of blood or disturbed ground left by injured animals. Where You'll Find Them Hunting Historically developed in Germany, the Hanoverian Scenthound's heartland remains in Central Europe. You'll find them actively working in: Germany: Especially in areas with large forested hunting grounds. Austria: Similar terrain to Germany makes it suitable. Scandinavia: Increasingly popular for moose and deer tracking. France: Used in areas with driven hunts and a need for reliable follow-up. Increasingly, North America: A small but growing number of hunters are importing Hanoverians for their superior tracking abilities, especially for whitetail and elk. Characteristics and Care: A No-Frills Breed Temperament: Hanoverians are intensely focused and driven when working. At home, they are calm, loyal, and devoted to their families. However, they need a job to do and are not suited to a purely sedentary lifestyle. They can be aloof with strangers. Physical Needs: These are powerful, medium-sized dogs (50-60 cm, 30-40 kg) built for endurance. They need daily exercise, ideally involving tracking work or long walks. Grooming: Short, dense coat requires minimal grooming. Check ears regularly for infections. Health: Generally healthy, but potential issues include hip and elbow dysplasia, and bloat. Choose breeders who screen for these conditions. Important note: They are not kennel dogs. They bond strongly with their handler and need to live as part of the family to thrive. Training for the Track: Building a Tracking Machine Early Start: Introduce scent work as early as possible (8-10 weeks). Start with simple blood trails in your yard. Blood is Key: Use real deer or boar blood (available from butcher shops or harvested game). Dilute it significantly at first. Gradual Progression: Increase the length and complexity of the trails. Add changes in terrain, obstacles, and age the trails to make them more challenging. Positive Reinforcement: Reward success with high-value treats and praise. Avoid punishment. Introduce the Harness: Get the dog comfortable wearing a tracking harness from a young age. Voice Commands: Teach clear commands for "track," "find," "stay," and "speak" (to indicate the location of the wounded game). Essential Training Exercises: Dragging a Scent Rag: Start by dragging a blood-soaked rag a short distance, letting the dog watch. Then, hide the rag and command the dog to find it. Gradually increase the distance and complexity. Simulated Wounded Game Trails: Create realistic scenarios with blood droplets, hair, and hoof prints. Include changes in direction and "beds" where the animal rested. Ageing Trails: Let trails sit for increasing periods (1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, etc.) to challenge the dog's scenting ability. Live Game Introduction (Controlled): If possible, work with experienced trackers to introduce your dog to real wounded game in a controlled environment. This is crucial for developing the dog's focus and drive. On the Hunt: Hanoverian Scenthound Tactics Leash Work: Hanoverians work on a long leash (5-10 meters) to allow them to follow the trail without interference. Nose to the Ground: They are methodical trackers, keeping their nose close to the ground to maintain the scent. Vocalization: A good Hanoverian will "speak" (bark) when they find the wounded animal, alerting the hunter to its location. Tenacity: They will stay on the trail, even through difficult terrain or in adverse weather conditions. Important: Trust your dog. If they indicate a track, follow it, even if you don't see obvious signs. Hanoverian Scenthounds are not for everyone. They require a dedicated owner who understands their specific needs and is willing to invest the time and effort to train them properly. But for the hunter who demands the best in blood tracking, the Hanoverian Scenthound is an invaluable asset. They transform what could be a lost animal into a successful recovery. #huntingdog

The Grizzly Bear Chair is a gift from hunter Seth Kinman to President Andrew Johnson. 1865, USA Seth Kinman (September 29, 1815 – February 24, 1888) was an early settler of Humboldt County, California, a hunter based in Fort Humboldt, a famous chair maker, and a nationally recognized entertainer. He stood over 6 ft (1.83 m) tall and was known for his hunting prowess and his brutality toward bears and Indian warriors. Kinman claimed to have shot a total of over 800 grizzly bears, and, in a single month, over 50 elk. He was also a hotel keeper, saloon keeper, and a musician who performed for President Lincoln on a fiddle made from the skull of a mule. The Grizzly Bear Chair is a unique chair presented to Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, in 1865. It was made of bear skin and decorated in a style popular at the time. The chair became a symbol of Johnson's personal preferences and reflected his connection with nature and the frontier spirit. The armchair not only served as a piece of furniture, but also embodied the desire for simplicity and accessibility, which was important for Johnson, who came to power after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and had to make every effort to rebuild the country after the Civil War. Kinman made his name first as a hunter, especially as a hunter of grizzly bears. California was noted for its large population of grizzlies. Seth's son Carlin claimed that they once saw 40 grizzlies at one time. The Grizzly Bear Chair A gift from hunter Seth Kinman to President Andrew Johnson, was are one of favorite presidential gifts. Known for his publicity seeking, Kinman appeared as a stereotypical mountain man dressed in buckskins on the U.S. East Coast and selling cartes de visites of himself and his famous chairs. The chairs were made from elkhorns and grizzly bear skins and given to U.S. Presidents. Presidents so honored include James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, and Rutherford Hayes. Pard Digital Scope Review I recently purchased the Pard digital scope, and I've had the opportunity to test it in various conditions. Here’s my honest assessment of its performance, features, and overall usability. Pros: Day and Night Functionality: One of the standout features of the Pard scope is its ability to operate both during the day and at night. The image quality remains sharp and clear in both scenarios, which is a significant advantage for versatility in different hunting or shooting situations. IR Illuminator: The built-in infrared (IR) illuminator is a game-changer for nighttime use. It enhances visibility in complete darkness, making it easier to spot targets at a distance. The adjustable brightness levels are particularly helpful for adapting to various environments. Laser Rangefinder: The integrated rangefinder is a remarkable addition. It provides accurate distance measurements to targets, which is crucial for making precise shots, especially over long distances. This feature alone adds a lot of value for serious shooters. User-Friendly Interface: The scope’s interface is intuitive and easy to navigate. Setting up the reticle, adjusting brightness, and toggling between day and night modes is straightforward, which is great for users of all experience levels. Durability and Build Quality: The Pard scope feels well-constructed and robust. It is designed to withstand the elements, and I've had no issues with it in harsh weather conditions, which is a plus for outdoor enthusiasts. Cons: Weight: One of the downsides of the Pard digital scope is its weight. Compared to traditional scopes, it is relatively heavier, which could be a consideration for those who prioritize lightweight equipment for long treks. Battery Life: While the scope has many impressive features, I found that the battery life could be better. Extended use, especially with the IR illuminator on high settings, drains the battery fairly quickly. Carrying spare batteries is advisable for longer sessions. Price Point: The Pard scope is priced on the higher side compared to some standard optical scopes. While it offers advanced technology and features, budget-conscious buyers might find it to be a significant investment. Learning Curve: Although the interface is user-friendly, the range of features may be overwhelming for beginners. It took me some time to fully understand and utilize all the functionalities effectively. Image Quality in Extreme Low Light: While the image is clear in most low-light situations, I found that in extremely dim conditions, some distortion occurs. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it's something to be aware of if you're primarily using it for night hunting. Conclusion Overall, the Pard digital scope offers a lot of value for those looking for advanced capabilities in both day and night settings. The combination of a built-in IR illuminator and laser rangefinder is excellent for enhancing accuracy and usability.

Review of the Carl Zeiss 8x42 HD Conquest Binoculars I recently had the opportunity to use the Carl Zeiss 8x42 HD Conquest binoculars, and I must say, they are impressive in many ways. Here’s my honest assessment based on my experience. Optical Quality: The optics on these binoculars are exceptional. The 8x magnification combined with a 42mm objective lens offers a bright, clear image even in low-light conditions. The HD glass provides excellent color fidelity and contrast, which is particularly noticeable when observing wildlife or landscapes. I was amazed by the sharpness of the images at various distances, and there was minimal distortion at the edges of the field of view. Build and Design: The build quality is solid, with a robust and durable construction that feels premium in hand. The rubber armor provides a good grip and adds a layer of protection against bumps and drops. Weighing in at a reasonably manageable 24 ounces, they are comfortable to hold for extended periods, though they are not the lightest option available in this category. Ease of Use: Focusing is smooth and precise, thanks to the central focusing wheel. I found it easy to adjust to my vision, which is a significant advantage for birdwatchers like myself. The 42mm objective lenses offer a generous field of view, making it easier to track moving subjects. Light Transmission and Coatings: The multi-coated lenses significantly enhance light transmission, and I noticed minimal glare when using them in bright sunlight. This feature is crucial for daytime observations, as it helps maintain image quality. Weather Resistance: Another highlight is their water and fog resistance. I had the chance to use them in varying weather conditions, and they performed reliably without any issues. This makes them a great choice for outdoor enthusiasts who need reliable optics in different environments. Price Point: While they are on the pricier side compared to some competitors, I believe the quality of the optics and the overall performance justify the investment. For serious birdwatchers, hunters, or nature enthusiasts, these binoculars are worth considering. Conclusion: Overall, the Carl Zeiss 8x42 HD Conquest binoculars deliver an outstanding viewing experience with their superior optical quality, durable construction, and user-friendly design. If you’re looking for high-performance binoculars that will last for years, I highly recommend giving these a try. They have certainly earned a permanent place in my outdoor gear. #CarlZeiss #8x42HDConquest #BinocularsReview #OpticalQuality #HighDefinition #Birdwatching #WildlifeObservation #BuildQuality #DurableDesign #FocusPrecision #LightTransmission #MultiCoatedLenses #WaterResistant #FogResistant #OutdoorGear #NatureEnthusiasts #UserFriendly #FieldOfView #Performance #PricePoint #Investment #ViewingExperience #ReliableOptics #Magnification #LandscapeObservation #SeriousOutdoorGear

Bear Gun Shootout: The Drill To get a better handle on this debate I enlisted the help of two fellow pistoleros: Sean Murphy, a USPSA Grand Master, and Outdoor Life staff writer Tyler Freel, who by virtue of living in Alaska hunts bears every year. We conducted a live-fire experiment at Gunsite Academy in the form of a simple, but challenging drill. The three of us shot an array of five knockdown steel poppers from far to near to simulate a bear charge. The farthest target was in the center and then we zig-zagged from far left to far right and then to near left and near right to add in erratic motion and increase the stress level. The farthest target was approximately 20 yards away and the closest were about 12 yards downrange. Watch the video above to see the drill for yourself.

Hunting Ammo: What to Look for in a Big-Game Bullet Hunting bullets have come a long way since the first round lead ball was launched game-ward from a long-barreled muzzleloader. Bullets now are long and streamlined, tipped with space-age material, and constructed of copper married to lead through special bonding processes. They are incredibly accurate, highly aerodynamic, and boast superb terminal performance. They are the finest killing projectiles the world has ever known; that’s a great thing for us as hunters. Bullet Mold What Kills Game? To effectively and cleanly kill a big-game animal, a bullet needs to expand reliably and penetrate deeply no matter what it encounters en route. That’s the crux of bullet performance. If a bullet fragments to bits upon impact, or stops upon encountering bone, it likely won’t penetrate deeply enough to accomplish a clean kill. Or if it fails to expand, it may simply pencil through, doing minimal damage along the way and failing to accomplish a clean kill. Here’s a short anatomy-of-a-kill lesson for you: There are three ways a bullet will cause rapid and mostly painless death: 1: Collapse the lungs, causing a dearth of oxygen to the brain. 2: Cause massive damage to the circulatory system including the heart, arteries, and veins, leading to catastrophic loss of blood and blood pressure. 3: Disrupt or destroy the central nervous system, which consists of the brain and spinal column.* Of the three, number one—the lungs—offers the biggest target, results in the fastest death, and usually comes with the side benefit of accomplishing number 2 en-route. When a bullet passes through the lungs they collapse almost instantly. Arteries and veins, and sometimes the heart, are destroyed as well. Within seconds the brain is starved of oxygen and blood pressure plummets. The animal literally blacks out and tips over, unconscious even before it is dead. This is the ideal, painless-as-possible death that we as ethical hunters should strive for every time we take a shot.

The Long Game There is still no cure for CWD, and unfortunately, the short-term outlook isn’t positive. Yet CWD won’t seriously affect herd numbers until a sufficiently high percentage of deer contract it, and that just hasn’t happened yet in most places. Each summer, I get excellent trail camera photos of outwardly healthy whitetails meandering through the hills and valleys of our farm, masking the CWD issues at hand. We still have high deer densities and mostly healthy looking whitetails, with no signs of a population decline. I asked Sumners when we might see whitetail populations decline in southern Wisconsin. “In areas like that, with such a large population of deer, the proportion of the population that will have to die from CWD for the average hunter to see a visible decline would have to be significant," he said. "It’s a numbers game, and we haven’t gotten to the point of the disease where population decline is occurring.” Still, knowing what we know, we’re torn about how to properly manage our land. In the short-term, my family plans to harvest plenty of does each season and fill our buck tags if we can. I don’t plan to kill a slew of 1.5-year-old bucks because I am looking for a bigger challenge, but with CWD tied to our landscape for the foreseeable future, it will be hard to pass on anything of age knowing there’s a 50-50 chance the buck already has CWD. The disease has established itself, and it’s largely up to cooperating private landowners to listen to the experts such as the ones mentioned here and do their part.
