The Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) is one of Canada’s leading conservation organizations, dedicated to fostering appreciation for wildlife and preserving the country's natural heritage. Founded in 1961, CWF has been instrumental in promoting environmental education, supporting scientific research, and advocating for sustainable practices that benefit both humans and wildlife. It focuses on wildlife conservation, protecting natural resources CWF promoting sustainable hunting and fishing practices. The Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) is a non-profit organization that actively participates in research and biodiversity conservation projects across Canada. History of CWF Established in 1961, the Canadian Wildlife Federation was created to address growing concerns about habitat loss, pollution, and declining wildlife populations across Canada. At the time, there was a lack of coordinated effort to protect the nation's rich biodiversity, and CWF emerged as a unifying voice for conservationists, scientists, educators, and outdoor enthusiasts. From its early days, CWF focused on engaging Canadians in wildlife conservation through education, advocacy, and hands-on projects. Over the decades, the organization has expanded its scope to tackle modern challenges such as climate change, invasive species, and urbanization. Today, CWF remains at the forefront of efforts to safeguard Canada's natural resources for future generations. Membership and Support CWF has a robust membership base, with over 450,000 supporters nationwide. This includes individual members, corporate partners, educational institutions, and community groups who share a commitment to wildlife conservation. While not all members are hunters, many hunters and anglers actively support CWF due to its emphasis on sustainable resource management and habitat preservation. In addition to membership fees, CWF receives funding from government grants, corporate sponsorships, donations, and fundraising events. The organization's annual budget typically ranges between $8 million and $12 million , which is allocated toward programs, research, education, and advocacy initiatives. Hunting Impact and Conservation Efforts Hunting plays an important role in CWF's conservation strategy. Many hunters are among the organization's most dedicated supporters, recognizing the importance of sustainable hunting practices in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Below are some ways hunting contributes to CWF's mission: Wildlife Management : Regulated hunting helps control populations of certain species, preventing overgrazing and reducing human-wildlife conflicts. For example, moose and deer hunting quotas are carefully managed to maintain balanced ecosystems. Funding Conservation : A significant portion of revenue generated from hunting licenses, permits, and equipment sales supports conservation projects. Hunters contribute millions of dollars annually to habitat restoration, research, and education programs. Community Engagement : Hunters often serve as stewards of the land, participating in citizen science projects, monitoring wildlife populations, and reporting illegal activities such as poaching. Traditional Knowledge : CWF works with Indigenous communities to incorporate traditional knowledge into wildlife management plans. This collaboration ensures that cultural practices, including subsistence hunting, are respected and integrated into broader conservation goals. Interesting Facts About CWF National Geographic Partnership : CWF partnered with National Geographic to launch the "Explore the Wild" program, which encourages Canadians to connect with nature through exploration and learning. Youth Engagement : Through programs like "Biggest School Bird Watch," CWF engages thousands of students each year in wildlife observation and data collection, inspiring the next generation of conservationists. Species Recovery Projects : CWF has been involved in numerous successful species recovery projects, including the reintroduction of swift foxes, wood bison, and trumpeter swans to parts of their historic range. Urban Wildlife Initiatives : Recognizing the growing disconnect between people and nature in urban areas, CWF launched initiatives like "Grow for Pollinators" and "Wild City" to bring wildlife habitats into cities and suburbs. Climate Change Focus : In recent years, CWF has prioritized addressing the impacts of climate change on wildlife. Their research highlights how rising temperatures, shifting migration patterns, and changing ecosystems affect species across Canada. The Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) is a vital force in protecting Canada's natural heritage, with over 450,000 supporters and an annual budget of $8–12 million. By combining education, advocacy, and practical conservation efforts, CWF addresses pressing environmental issues while honoring the traditions of hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation. Hunters play a crucial role in this mission, contributing financially and as stewards of the land. As Canada faces new challenges such as climate change and habitat fragmentation, CWF continues to lead the way in ensuring a sustainable future for wildlife and people alike.

Review of the Franchi Horizont .30-06 with Dual Brake Muzzle Device As an avid hunter with years of experience in various hunting conditions, I recently had the opportunity to test the Franchi Horizont chambered in .30-06, equipped with the Dual Brake Muzzle Device (DTK). My experience using this rifle has provided me with valuable insights, and I’d like to share both the pros and the cons. Pros: Precision and Accuracy: The Franchi Horizont impresses with its accuracy. Even at longer ranges, I found it easy to achieve tight groups. This is crucial during hunting trips where a precise shot can make the difference between success and failure. Build Quality: The construction of the Franchi Horizont .30-06 is commendable. The materials used feel robust and well-crafted. The wood and metal finish give it a classic look, and the ergonomic design fits comfortably in hand, making it great for those long hours in the field. Recoil Management: The addition of the Dual Brake Muzzle Device is a game changer. It significantly reduces recoil, allowing for quicker follow-up shots. As someone who has experienced the harsh kick of a .30-06 before, I found the recoil manageable and less tiring during a long day of hunting. Versatility: The .30-06 caliber is incredibly versatile, making it suitable for a wide range of game. Whether you’re hunting deer, elk, or even larger game, this caliber has proven effective across various situations. Aesthetic Appeal: The aesthetic aspects of the Franchi Horizont cannot be overlooked. It has a sleek design that stands out in the field but is also understated enough not to draw unnecessary attention. Cons: Weight: While the sturdiness of the rifle is a plus, it does come with added weight. For hunters who often trek through rugged terrain, this could become a bit cumbersome over time. Price Point: The Franchi Horizont is on the higher end of the price spectrum. While I believe you get what you pay for, some may find it difficult to justify the investment, especially if they’re newer to hunting or don’t head out into the field often. Initial Setup: The first-time setup can be a bit complex. If you’re not well-versed in mounting scopes and the like, you may need assistance to get it just right. I’d recommend investing time in understanding the gun's features and getting help from a knowledgeable friend or a professional. Limited Aftermarket Support: Unlike some more mainstream rifle brands, aftermarket parts and accessories can be slightly harder to come by. Sensitivity to Ammunition: I noticed that the rifle tends to be picky with certain types of ammunition. Using high-quality rounds produced the best results, which might be an additional expense for hunters looking to use bulk cheaper ammo. Conclusion: Overall, the Franchi Horizont .30-06 with the Dual Brake Muzzle Device is an exceptional rifle that excels in performance and aesthetics. #FranchiHorizont #HuntingRifle #30-06 #MuzzleBrake #FieldReview

This weekend my boyfriend took me out for my first deer hunt. I got put in a great spot and was pushed some nice does, took a shot and landed my first deer! At the end of the day we walked up to an open field, see if any where out eating. In that spot he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Had to make sure I could kill a deer first lol

Morocco To Boost Game Hunting Tourism Game hunting in Morocco generates over MAD 1.2 billion per year with 80 000 Moroccans and 3,000 tourists participating in the sport annually. Rabat - The Moroccan High Commission for Water and Forestry and the Fight Against Desertification plans to promote hunting tourism in Morocco, using it as a tool for rural development. According to Abderrahim Houmy, the Secretary General for the commission, hunting has real social-economic potential Approximately 3000 tourists per year currently come to hunt in Morocco and the commission wants to increase this number to 15,000 by 2024, Houmy stated at the annual Game Fair in Lamotte-Beuvron, France, held between June 14 and 16. For Chafik Jilali, the president of the Moroccan Royal Hunting Federation, Morocco is a prime destination for hunting tourism. “Morocco is very close to Europe. It already has accommodation infrastructure on par with that of Europe. We also have good transport networks, including airports in the south of the country for tourists wanting to hunt in that area,” he told Morocco World News. Diversity of game is also an asset. Hunting game includes wild boar, hare, rabbit, partridge, and water birds. The commission has set up hunting reserves across the country. To increase the amount of tourists engaging in the sport, a number of investments will have to be made, noted Houmy at the Game Fair. “Hunting is not just about the game, it’s also about accommodation, transport, culture, local produce, gastronomy...A real promotional effort must be made,” he added, as quoted by Moroccan newsource Media24. Around 80, 000 Moroccans also practice recreational hunting in Morocco, which generates over MAD 1.2 billion ($125.6 million) per year in revenue. According to Houmy, a hunter spends on average MAD 15,000 ($1570) on the sport, taking into account transport, accommodation and other costs. The direct revenue from hunting permits and license taxes reached MAD 43.5 million (approximately $4.5 million) last year, up 4.5% from 2017. Houmy adds that hunting also plays an important role in rural employment. For the 2017/2018 season, hunting generated 995,000 days of permanent work and 213,000 days of temporary work according to the commission. Houmy was not available for further comment on the proposal. Morocco’s participation at the Game Fair was a step towards promoting hunting opportunities to an international audience, so opening up the sector. The Game Fair is the largest hunting trade show in France, bringing over 80,000 visitors. Morocco attended the event for the first time this year, as guest of honour. The Moroccan pavilion displayed information on the country’s game, gastronomy, and culture to attendees.

In my opinion, possibly the best model of proper off road going and capable "comfortable" vehicles ever. Another vehicle I seriously mourn. I often wonder where Land Rover went wrong

Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park is a justifiably famous location for photography. But after years of visiting this place, the images that I'm drawn to are not the classic bears-snatching-salmon shots. Instead, it's scenes like this that inspire me to raise my camera.

Picking Your Puppy: Traits to Look for in Your Next Hunting Dog Are You Looking for a Hunting Dog Puppy? You wouldn’t walk into a sporting goods store and purchase the first shotgun you saw without doing some background research first, so why then would you skip that step when selecting a puppy that you’ll be hunting with for the next 10 to 12 years? Many hunters make that mistake and end up regretting later. In addition to being your most valuable hunting asset, your hunting dog is likely to become your closest companion. Not only will it share some of the best moments of your life with you, it’ll make many of them possible. You’ll spend hours with your dog during training and in the field, so you want to take great care in choosing the puppy that is perfect for you. Tim Nichols of Fall Flight Retrievers says not every puppy has what it takes to become an outstanding hunting dog. So you need to know what qualities and traits to look for, specifically when it comes to health and trainability. “The most important tip I can give you is to go look at several litters of puppies and don’t take your checkbook with you,” Nichols said. “You need to do some considerable research before selecting a puppy. If you bring your checkbook with you, you’re likely to purchase a puppy before you should because they’re cute, and they’re hard to resist.” Pedigree and Health You’ve heard the saying he or she is “a chip off the old block” when referring to a child’s resemblance in personality and appearance to his or her parents. This rings true in the dog world as well, especially when it comes to health-related issues and trainability. “The very first thing you want to do is look at the parents’ health clearances,” Nichols says. “Make sure that neither parent has had an issue with hip dysplasia. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) will certify the dog’s hips based on a scale of good, excellent or fair, and will include the results in a database.” Remember the puppy you choose should be your hunting partner for 10 to 12 years. If that puppy ends up with hip dysplasia, you’ll get no more than three or four years out of it. Parents also go through certification that checks their eyes for vision problems and their bodies for muscular dystrophy. There’s also a genetic test for Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC), a genetic disorder that can be passed down from the parents. A dog with EIC will get heat exhaustion if it is overly worked or excited and can experience muscle weakness and even collapse. “Last year, a guy brought me a great-looking dog to train,” Nichols said. “I had her out in the field training and all of the sudden, she lost control of her back legs. She couldn’t even get in her trailer. I took her home and called the owner. He had not checked on the parents' genetics, and sure enough, after testing his dog, he found out she had EIC.” Nichols warns that if you select a puppy with parents that have not been genetically tested, it will most likely come back to bite you. Performance Titles Next, check to see what titles the parents have received. If the parents have earned impressive titles, such as Grand Champion, etc., then chances are, the puppies are going to have the raw materials it takes to be great hunting dogs too. “When I train a dog that has parents that are titled and have a good health certificate, then I know that dog is going to learn fast. If the parents can do it, then the puppy can do it. It’s as if the puppy is programmed. I can often train a dog with good health and breeding in three or four weeks, whereas other dogs can take three or four months.” Nichols says when selecting a puppy, you are most likely going to get what you pay for. “Don’t expect much out of a puppy that only cost a couple hundred bucks with no health certificate,” he said. “You can get a nice, title puppy with all genetic testing for between $500 to $600. A puppy with Grand Hunter Retriever parents can run around $1,000. Of course, you can spend even more for a super-high quality puppy, but it’s not necessary.” Time to Select Your Puppy Nichols said when you go to look at the puppies, also check out the surroundings and ask yourself these questions: Are they in a nice whelping box with mom or out in a kennel in cold weather? Is the breeder reputable? Are the parents on site? Is the area clean and hygienic? If you can’t answer yes to these questions, you need to keep searching. When it comes time to select a puppy, Nichols warns not to automatically assume that the puppy that is running around, retrieving and being playful is the best pick of the litter. “That fact that one puppy is active and playful and the other two are resting or sleeping doesn’t mean a thing,” Nichols said. “The other two puppies may have been running and playing earlier and they’re now taking a nap. So, you can’t really tell much about a puppy by its energy level at any given moment. You do want to see if the puppy will come to you and if it acts spooky or is extremely shy.” Again, the best determinate of a puppy’s potential is its parents. “If the parents are on the premises, ask to see them,” he said. “Ask to see what mom and dad can do. If someone is coming to pick out one of my puppies, I always take out the parents and show the buyer what they can do. That way, they can get a true idea of their puppy’s potential.” Once you’ve selected a puppy, the best thing you can do for it is to socialize it. “For the first five months of that puppy’s life, take it with you everywhere you go,” Nichols said. “Get it out around other dogs, family members and friends as much as possible. If the dog is not socialized well, it will scare easily and will be much more difficult to train.” During those first several months, Nichols recommends you teach the puppy basic commands, such as sit, come and stay. Selecting a Trainer Once the dog has learned the basic commands and is approximately six months old, it’s ready to go to a trainer. When selecting a trainer, Nichols recommends following these steps. Ask for references. Ask the trainer for phone numbers of other clients and call them to ask about their experiences with the trainer. Attend several hunt tests near your home to check out the participating dogs. Find out who trains the dogs that perform the best. Ask the trainer to show you his dogs and work them for you. Also have him show you the parents of the puppies he has available and ask to see what they can do. Once you hand your dog over to a trainer, remain involved in the process to ease the transition for both you and the dog once it returns to you several months later. Actively participate in your dog’s training and use the opportunity to learn how to handle the dog. “Once your dog completes its training, take it hunting and follow the same program that your trainer used,” Nichols said. “After hunting with the dog for a season, bring it back to the trainer for a tune-up. Take the dog to hunt tests and make sure that it continues to progress.” If you put great care into selecting your puppy and choosing a high-quality trainer, then you’ll create a partnership that will reap great rewards for years to come, making the time, effort and money spent well worth it.

Why hunt for bear in Maine? For new and experienced hunters alike, going on a bear hunt is a great way to enjoy nature, get some exercise, and spend quality time outdoors with friends and family. The season starts in late August, offering experienced hunters extra time to scout for other species such as deer or moose while enjoying warmer temperatures. Successful hunters are rewarded with wholesome, locally sourced, free-range, hormone-free lean protein which, if handled properly, is excellent to eat! Bear hunting also helps manage the population. Maine has a healthy and stable population of black bears – the largest in the eastern United States, in fact. Since black bears do not have any natural predators, it would be very easy for the population to grow to an unsustainable level, leading to starvation, disease, and death. Bear hunting helps keep the population at a number where bears and their environment stay healthy.

Unsustainable Logging, Fishing, Hunting Are the Main Factors of Extinction Crisis An unprecedented global extinction crisis is now threatening our planet. More than a million species are expected to go extinct in the next few decades, according to scientists. A groundbreaking analysis found that one in five people worldwide depends on wild animals, plants, and fungi for their food and means of subsistence. However, the report found that many undomesticated animals are not being collected responsibly, endangering global food security. Experts predicted that one million species of animals and plants could become extinct in the ensuing decades in 2019, and uncontrolled fishing, hunting, and logging are responsible for a large portion of this, as per BBC News. The sustainable usage of wild species is now deemed essential for both people and nature in a new report by the same organization. Additionally, more species may be pushed to the limit because of climate change and rising demand, endangering the availability of food. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) equivalent for climate scientists is the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Their most recent review, which was accepted by 139 nations in Bonn, Germany, focused on how to conduct logging, fishing, and hunting more sustainably without endangering biodiversity and food security. It was discovered that 50,000 species of wild animals, plants, and fungi serve as a source of food, medicine, fuel, employment, and other necessities for billions of people worldwide. Approximately one-third of oceanic wild fish are overfished, unsustainable logging threatens over than 10% of wild trees, and unsustainable hunting has driven more than 1,300 mammals to extinction, according to the assessment.
