Elk Hunting on Your Own Most attempts at DIY bulls fail miserably, but these experts are here to help Nearly every big game hunter dreams of elk hunting out West, but most of the time, that dream is not a reality. Most first-time, out-of-state elk hunters go in unprepared, and then go home without an elk. That’s why we polled these three DIY elk hunting experts for their advice. Think of Yourself Bill Vanderheyden of Iron Will Broadheads, knows the elk woods well. The first thing the out-of-stater thinks about when planning for an elk hunt is being in physical shape, and that’s important. But if you live near sea level, nothing can prepare your body for the change in elevation except for time. Vanderheyden sees it every year. “The altitude can really take it away from you at first. It can reduce your ability for critical thinking and physically drain you for the first few days,” he says. “I’ve seen people come out here and have to turn around and leave because they felt so bad. If you can spend the first day or two of your trip getting acclimated, that will help.” Stay hydrated in the mountains, too, and carry plenty of water. The last thing you want miles from camp is a cramp. Plus, if you get lost, you can make it for a while without food, but without water, you’re toast. What you wear, and carry in your pack, is also important. Temperatures in the mountains can fluctuate like crazy. It can be in the 30s in the morning and in the 70s in the afternoon. Even if it’s mild out when you start, pack a heavier jacket. Lastly, buy quality boots, and break them in before you go. Sore or blistered feet are a deal-breaker. Plan Ahead Jace Bauserman, noted outdoor writer and elk hunter, certainly understands the game. “My biggest tip is to do your homework ahead of time,” Bauserman says. “Pay your subscription to the onX Hunt App and start prospecting your hunting area. Don’t pick a single basin to explore and call it good. Pick multiple spots. I like to find at least three, off-the-beaten path areas that are a mile walk or more from the trailhead. But I also like to locate three, close-to-the-road spots that I can pop into and out of quickly. The “go-deep” drum has been beaten hard. I’ve had some great elk hunting right off a main roadway. Mark your spots on your map and be sure to save your maps offline. This way if you don’t have cell service, you still have access to your maps.” Basically, focus on elk basic needs. And they only need three things to survive, but you need to understand four things to hunt them: Prime forage. I’m not talking about grass. In September, you need to be looking on north-facing slopes, not the south-facing ones where the summer grass will be burned out. Cover. Not just a place to hide, but thermal cover for keeping cool during the early season, and warm during the late season. Cedar thickets are a prime example. Water. That can be the limiting factor, especially in places like New Mexico because of the heat and relative lack of it. Pick Your Spots After looking at those three things, consider pressure. That’s a limiting factor in Colorado and in Idaho, but in two different ways. In Colorado, there is a ton of human hunting pressure. In Idaho, the pressure is from wolves. You need to find where they are not pressured. Figure out which of these four things is the limiting factor, and your success at finding elk will go up. Get at least a mile or more away from roads and you’ll escape much of that pressure. Then, get high and use the binos to find elk. Use OnX to identify quality glassing points. Don’t expend all of your energy walking. Glass to find elk, and then burn some calories getting ahead of the herd. If you can’t glass them up, look for fresh sign. Vanderheyden has a lot of elk hunting experience as well, and he says their nomadic tendencies can make them tough for traveling deer hunters to pin down. “Elk move around a lot. The typical Eastern or Midwestern whitetail hunter can find some good sign and sit there and probably see deer,” he says. “Deer typically have a small range of a mile or two, so sitting tight in a good spot can be productive. Not so with elk. They cover a lot more ground. I suggest putting some miles on to find them. I keep moving around until I either see elk or find extremely fresh sign, made within the last 24 hours. But actually seeing an elk is best.” Don’t be so intimidated by your dream of a western elk hunt that you put it off. But don’t go unprepared. Follow this advice, and your hunt will be a lot more memorable — and probably more successful, too.

Hunting With Dogs: Training & Safety Tips Hunting with your dog is an exhilarating way to experience outdoor life with your furred friend. Dogs have been hunting with humans for millennia. Many hunting breeds were actually developed specifically to find, flush out, or retrieve game. But that doesn’t mean that your dog will automatically know what to do on a hunt. Before you head out in search of game with your canine companion, you’ll need to train your dog. Aside from helping you find and retrieve the quarry you’re after, dogs also must become used to loud sounds like gunshots. You’ll also need to bring along the proper hunting gear necessary to keep your dog safe and satisfied in the field. Get Your Dog Used To Gunshots Gunshots are loud and can spook your dog into running off in the middle of a hunt. That’s why gun training is so important. Cara Harper is an expert in the field who regularly hunts with her Labrador Retrievers, Nita and Rou. Harper and her husband trained their pups by running ran retriever drills for the dogs, tossing a decoy “bumper” for the dogs to fetch while one of them fired a gun 100 yards away to start with. “The shooter fires a shot as the dog leaves to make a retrieve. With each retrieve, the shooter eases closer from behind the handler and dog,” says Harper. Reward your dog as they slowly get used to the shots. The process continues gradually until the gunner is eventually right beside the dog when shooting. Train Your Dog To Help Locate Game “Obedience is the keystone that all other training is built off,” affirms Harper. “If a dog won’t do a sit/stay for a short period of time on a stand, then there is no way that they’ll have the control to sit through an exciting duck hunt.” Trainer Barton Ramsey recommends starting obedience training at eight weeks of age and retrieval training at six to seven months old. This allows the dog to have the necessary skills and physical ability to handle more demanding tasks. When teaching dogs to find and flush out game, Harper suggests running quartering drills regularly. Quartering drills teach your dog to run back and forth in a zigzag pattern ahead of you. This allows them to locate more game than walking in a straight line. You can set up bumpers to guide your dog in this pattern, and use slight arm movements to help guide your dog. After the dog approaches each bumper, praise or treat your pup. Train Your Dog To Retrieve Game An excellent way to train your hunting dogs to retrieve game is to simulate a hunting scenario using decoys. Repeat the training on land and in water. This helps dogs get acclimated to different kinds of terrain. “We’ll have a bird boy one hundred or so yards out in a field, blow a duck call and catapult a bumper into the air so that the dog sees it fall,” says trainer Bob Owens. “The dog will then run out and bring back the bumper. Eventually, the dog learns to watch the sky for falling birds and to mark their location so that your dog knows where to find them for the retrieve.” Blind retrieve training is also critical. It allows you to guide a pooch to a fallen bird that the dog might not have seen fall. Though it requires diligent training to perfect, Harper suggests learning to guide your dog through a series of whistles and/or hand signals. Test Hunting Skills & Reinforce Training Before heading off to a hunt, see if your dog has what it takes to become a skilled hunting dog by participating in AKC Retriever Field Trials and hunting tests. Harper regularly participates in both with her dogs. Hunt tests help show you how well your dog will perform in the field. Field trials, meanwhile, let more experienced dogs show off their skills on the hunt. Plus, the events are geared towards the unique skills of different breeds including Pointers, Retrievers, and Spaniels. Owens and his dogs also regularly participate in both AKC events, as well as those of the Master National Retriever Club. Not only do these events ensure that his dogs are ready for the hunt, They also keep dogs active and in-shape during the off-season. Pack Proper Hunting Supplies While on the hunt, you’ll need to bring along some gear to keep your furry friend comfortable and safe. Jennifer Danella regularly hunts with her Labrador Retriever L.K. and Beagles, Remington and Beretta. Supplies can vary according to the type of hunt, however. “Any hunt I bring my dogs on, I have a first-aid kit filled with bandaging material, wound care items, and other emergency supplies,” says Danella. “For waterfowl hunting, my retriever L.K. wears a buoyant vest. Without question, it is the number-one big-game round of the 20th Century. And it’s still going strong. Like many other hunters, my first real deer rifle was chambered in the ought-six. Shooting 165-grain ballistic tips I put hundreds of pounds of corn-fed Michigan venison in the freezer over the years. I’ve also hunted with it across North America and in Africa, using 150-grain soft points, 180-grain Triple Shocks, 200-grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws, 180-grain Accubonds, and a bunch of other bullets I can’t think of at the moment. You won’t find another round with a more versatile array of offerings. It really is the best all-around hunting rifle caliber. Physics plays a big part in the .30/06’s success. It strikes a good balance between power and shootability. The recoil generated by the ought-six is at the upper end of what most shooters can manage without developing a debilitating flinch. And its terminal ballistics can handle all but thick-skinned dangerous game. It’s certainly more gun than most whitetails require, but it gets the job done and carries with it a nostalgia that few cartridges can match. If it was good enough for Teddy Roosevelt, this deer hunting caliber is good enough for the likes of you and me.

« Un chien perdu depuis 4 jours retrouvé à l’aide d’un drone à La Balme de Thuy » 😲 Alors qu’il participait à une partie de chasse samedi 19 octobre, M. Genans-Boiteux perd la trace de son jeune compagnon, nommé Usky, un Bruno du Jura de tout juste un an, encore en plein apprentissage. Après de longs jours de recherche, les chasseurs, désespérés, ont sollicité l’aide de la fédération. Certains agents sont formés et diplômés pour l’utilisation de drones équipés de caméra thermique. Mardi 22 octobre, Alexis Vautrin , technicien à la fédération s’est porté volontaire pour tenter de retrouver l’animal. Après 2 kilomètres de piste forestière en 4x4 puis 30 minutes d’efforts pour rejoindre la zone à pied, quelques secondes de survol suffirent pour qu’un point de chaleur soit détecté grâce à la caméra thermique de l’aéronef… C’était lui ! Vivant, debout, immobile, semblant désorienté et fatigué. C’est alors que la deuxième phase a débuté : le sauvetage. Les pompiers du (Groupe Montagne Sapeurs-Pompiers) ont pris le relais. En effet, le chien se trouvait dans une zone très escarpée, difficile d’accès. Grâce à leur équipement spécialisé et à leur détermination, les pompiers encordés sur environ 90 mètres ont finalement réussi à atteindre Usky. Le soulagement et la joie ont submergé son maître, et tous les intervenants ont partagé cette satisfaction. Il convient de saluer la belle collaboration entre la fédération des chasseurs et les pompiers, qui a permis de sauver la vie de ce chien.🤝

The Perfect Bowhunting Equipment for Alaska One thing I used to always think about is if I have the right bow setup for hunting in Alaska. I am going to cover some things that have helped me choose the perfect bow setup for me to hunt the backcountry of Alaska. I am no expert by any means, but I have hunted a lot throughout Alaska and the Lower 48 and this is what has been the all-around best setup for me. There are several factors that go into making a choice for the setup you want to bowhunt with. The first and sometimes the hardest thing you have to choose is your bow! I like to start with a bow that is light in weight, compact but not too compact, and produces good arrow speed. For example, the bow I am shooting currently is the Xpedition Archery Xscape. The bare bow weighs around 3.9 pounds. It measures 30-inches ATA (axle to axle), with an International Bowhunters Organization (IBO) speed 348- to 352 feet per second (FPS). This bow is fairly light, compact and offers great speed for shooting an arrow that has good weight for hunting. I like a lighter bare bow because when I hunt the backcountry, I have to pack everything, so it makes things easier. The second piece of equipment you need on your hunting bow setup is a fall-away arrow rest. There are so many to choose from; some are cable-driven, and some are limb-driven. I like a limb-driven rest like the Vapor Trail Gen 7. It’s really easy to set up and tune, plus it’s durable and easy to fix in the field if you have to, which has happened to me on a few hunting trips. The next important piece you’ll need is a good sight. This part can be overwhelming. The biggest question to answer is: Do you want a fixed, multi-pin setup; or single/multi-pin yardage-adjustable sight. On my bow I always use a three-pin yardage-adjustable sight from Black Gold Sights. That way I can still shoot 20- to 40 yards fixed and then adjust my sight to shoot out 50- to 100 yards if need be. It is the best of both worlds. I like to match my front sight with a hooded-style peep sight in the correct size. Next two pieces of equipment I lump together because you want them to balance each other out so you can have a steady shot. They are my stabilizer and arrow quiver. I like a stabilizer with front and back weight adjustment; there are a lot of options out there, you just need to find what works for you. The Stokerized SL Carbon Stasis or the M1 carbon SS1 stabilizer both give me the option to put weight on the front and back to steady my pin and they also offset my quiver to balance my bow from left to right. The arrow quiver I like is the Tight Spot 5-Arrow Quiver. It mounts to the back of the bow sight, fits super tight to the bow and is detachable. Balance is key to making the perfect shot. Last but not least are arrows. I could write a complete blog just on arrows. There are lots of archers out there that will weigh out each arrow and its components to get every arrow perfect, but this is what I do and what works for me. I am a big fan of micro-diameter arrows, 4 mm (.166 ID) or 5 mm (.205 ID) with at least a 50-grain outsert up front. I am currently using the Kill’n Stix Micro Ventilators with a wrap and three-fletch AAE Max Stealth vanes. My total arrow weight is 485 grains, and I am shooting around 280 FPS. It seems to be perfect for either a 100-grain fixed-blade broadhead or mechanical broadhead. With this setup my bow usually weighs around seven pounds total with five arrows in the quiver.

New Mexico bans scopes on muzzleloaders Earlier this month, the New Mexico State Game Commission voted to ban the use of scopes on all muzzleloaders beginning the 2023 hunting season. The new ruling specified that muzzleloader hunters are not allowed to use scopes on their muzzleloaders during a hunt, but that scopes are still legal for muzzleloaders during Any Legal Weapon hunts only. Stewart Liley, head biologist for the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, stated in the meeting with the commission that technology improvements have made muzzleloaders nearly as effective as centerfire rifles. Liley went on to note, “what we’re seeing biologically is that the harvest is going to be unsustainable,”. AG AFACCC 13 Hier, samedi 8 juillet s’est déroulée l’AG de l’afaccc 13. Nous remercions Mr Clément Conil pour l’accueil au domaine de St Amand . Suite aux rapports moral, d’activité et financier du président et trésorier, nous remercions Mr Daniel Keller, nouveau président de la FDC 13 pour sa très belle intervention. A l’issue de l’AG où environ 80 personnes ont répondu présentes, un rapproché vif et sonore s’engage vers le stand de la buvette où un lancé explosif se produit, une menée festive et groupée s’organise jusqu’à la fin du temps imparti qui nous mènera à la dégustation d’une succulente paella. Tout au long de la journée, l’animation « Ball Trap laser du soleil du ventoux » nous a organisé des petits concours qui ont rencontré un franc succès bravo 👏 Merci à tous nos fidèles adhérents qui ont répondus présents.
