The ammo shortage continues, and it’s making it difficult for hunters to not only find ammunition, but afford to buy it when they do find it. If you’re the hunter who only has a box or two stashed away, you’ll want to make every shot count, which means there’s not much wiggle room for range practice. Luckily, there are still ways to sharpen your shooting skills without sending a bullet downrange. 1. Dry Firing It’s OK to dry fire most firearms. Dry firing means pulling the trigger without a bullet in the chamber, and it won’t hurt most modern centerfires (though it’s not recommended to dry-fire rimfires or older guns). To be extra cautious, install a snap cap of the appropriate caliber that prevents damage to the firing pin. During dry fire practice, always follow the basic rules of gun safety. Treat it just like a real range session. Check that the gun is unloaded every time. Always point the gun and aim in a safe direction. It’s important to aim at a target to work on holding steady and following through with your shot. Dry firing allows you to get comfortable with your firearm, practice getting your sights in place, and remaining calm during and after the shot. It also allows you to practice with your gun without visiting a range, which can be more affordable and convenient. You can practice a little at home every day. Don’t rush through dry firing practice, as that defeats the purpose. You will only improve if you carefully and thoughtfully go through the steps of shooting every time to identify areas of improvement. Perfecting your shot process will improve your accuracy. Dry fire practice can help you work on regulating your breathing, squeezing the trigger, and holding steady. It also helps build muscle memory, so it can help you overcome the flinching and eye shutting that can accompany recoil anticipation. 2. Laser Training Systems If you want to kick your dry-fire training up a notch, there are a variety of laser training cartridges on the market that will fit your specific firearm. This is important because it allows you to be comfortable with the firearm you will use in the field. You aim a laser dot at a target and pull the trigger. Many of these systems are accompanied by a smartphone application that tracks your shots. This type of training isn’t free because you have to purchase the equipment and in some situations the smartphone application. The kits come in a variety of price points. But after the initial purchase, there’s usually minimal to no cost. There are similar systems that use sensors mounted on the firearm instead of lasers. They track the movement associated with aiming and the trigger pull. A smartphone application analyzes the movements and gives feedback on flinching, trigger pull, and recoil anticipation. Getting this type of specific feedback is a great way to improve. Plus, it’s fun to track progress and can be used as motivation to keep up the practice. 3. Belly Breathing … and Yoga! Most people never think about their breathing, but it can sure impact your shooting since with every breath you move your chest, abdomen, and shoulders. Breathing causes your firearm to rise and fall, affecting your aim. Learning to control your breathing will help you hold your firearm steady and make the best shot possible. USA Shooting, the national governing body for the U.S. Olympic sport of shooting, recommends shooters use “belly breathing” also known as diaphragmatic breathing. During this type of breathing, you inhale through your nose and deep into your stomach. Your stomach will expand to take in the air. As you exhale, your stomach will shrink back in. Belly breathing makes chest movement minimal. Competitive shooters practice this deep rhythmic breathing regularly. It has a calming effect that improves concentration and reduces movement in your chest. The National Rifle Association recommends hunters take the shot during the respiratory pause in this breathing cycle. That’s the natural pause between breaths after the exhale. During this pause the body is the most calm, stable, and relaxed. That’s why you’ll hear instructors tell shooters to squeeze the trigger at the end of the exhale. If you’re looking for belly breathing exercises, look to yoga. Belly breathing is a common yoga practice. Most yoga apps and videos will have exercises that teach this controlled breath process. With practice, it can become second-nature. 4. Airgun Power An air rifle is one of the most affordable practice options, and one of the most fun. You can purchase thousands of pellets for less than $10. The pellet rifle itself might range in price from $100 to $500, and many come with a scope. Practicing with a pellet gun is as close as you can get to the real thing. You can work on quickly acquiring the sight picture, holding steady on a rest, settling into different shooting positions, anticipating the recoil (even though it’s very minimal), and dealing with the sound that accompanies the shot. It also allows you to work on your trigger pull and improve your accuracy. Plus, plinking pellets at targets is fun. You can also switch up your shooting by firing at aluminum cans and old fruit, and many air guns are suitable for small-game hunting. 5. Spend Time With Wildlife It’s difficult to replicate the feeling of a big buck in your sights. Your heart is racing and you know in that moment everything you’ve worked for comes down to a split-second trigger pull. But many hunters find that after years of experience, the jittery feelings of buck fever can be replaced with excited confidence. Don’t underestimate how time in the field spent scouting and being close to game can improve your abilities during hunting season. Put simply, being around wildlife helps ease your nerves and improve your ability to spot game animals, judge their size, and predict their next move. That’s a huge component of being a capable shot in the field. These days, every shot you send downrange needs to count, but you can get a lot of valuable practice in without shooting up all of your scarce and expensive ammo. If you work on areas that need improvement, the payoff will show in the form of tighter groups, a steadier aim, and more quick, humane shots in the field.

Montana man convicted of poaching four bucks A Montana man recently lost his hunting privileges for the next 16 years after poaching four mule deer bucks last October. Brayden Reed was convicting of spotlighting and shooting two bucks on Oct. 2 and a third buck on private property on Oct. 8 before taking them to BLM’s Ah-Nei Recreation Area where he removed the antlers and backstraps, according to a press release. Reed did not have a valid hunting license at the time nor tags for any of the deer. All of the incidents occurred before the start of general deer season on Oct. 23. The bonus? During the investigation, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks game warden Connor Langel also discovered a fourth illegally killed mule deer. Reed pleaded guilty to four counts of unlawful possession of deer, two counts of wasting game, three counts of hunting during a closed season, two counts of unlawful use of equipment, two counts of hunting without a license and one count of killing more than a limit of deer along with additional crimes of littering and resource damage. Along with losing his hunting privileges in all states that honor the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact, he is required to pay fines and restitution exceeding $6,000. He also forfeited the rifle used to kill the deer.

Dozens of drunk grizzlies hit by trains for decades Drunk grizzly bears have been hit by trains near Glacier National Park in Montana for decades. Spilled grain mixed with moisture from snow and rain equal the perfect concoction to both lure bears and dull their senses. This unfortunate equation means that the bears are too slow to outrun the trains heading their way. Fatalities linked to the fermented grain have been tallied since 1980 with a total of 63 grizzly bears killed along the rail line that stretches over Marias Pass and the Great Bear Wilderness, according to the Cowboy State Daily. While two grizzly populations roam the Lower 48, the ones being impacted by trains come from the Northern Continental Divide grizzly population. Chuck Neal, a retired federal ecologist, says the spilled grain “can be a tempting treat for bears” and that “with enough moisture from snow and rain, ‘the spilled grain actually ferments in place and becomes a de facto brewery.’” Bears attracted to the spilled grain “might fall asleep right on site if they get drunk first. They can, and have, fallen asleep in a drunken stupor right on the tracks,” said Neal. “Other times they loiter on the tracks until a train approaches, at high speed, then drunkenly attempt to outrun the train — no can do — and are smashed.” Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) is the rail company that runs this particular line. Neal said that the company has “been stalling […] for some years” to do anything about the issue like adding noise makers that are triggered as trains approach specific areas like the expanse between Marias Pass and the Great Bear Wilderness. “Another idea is to not load the train cars so full, an idea that BNSF does not like,” said Neal. “Another idea is not run the trains under certain weather conditions when derailment possibilities increase, an idea that BNSF also does not like. Ответы Группы компаний "Охотник" на вопросы о патронах Denel PMP Не так давно мы совместно с Группой компаний «Охотник» предложили вам обсудить тему выбора патронов для нарезного оружия в контексте использования Denel PMP. Весь август вы оставляли свои вопросы об использовании данных патронов в специальной теме на форуме. Сегодня эксперты ГК "Охотник" отвечают на самые интересные из них. - Оболочка с сердечником не спаяна? Судя по информации из интернета, в туше пуля фрагментируется на 3 компонента, которые потом одновременно найти очень сложно. - Фрагментация пули зависит не только от её конструкции. Влияет сумма факторов: дистанция выстрела, встречались ли на пути препятствия, например, ветки, попала пуля в кость или нет. По конструкции у Denel PMP немного различаются пули в сериях патронов Standart и ProAmm – разница показана на оборотной стороне упаковки патронов (см. фото). Предполагаем, что пуля Standart более склонна к фрагментации, хотя фактически не сталкивались с такими случаями. По нашей информации полуоболочечные пули обеих серий патронов Denel PMP раскрываются практически одинаково – в форме «гриба», не распадаясь на части в туше. Об этом свидетельствуют клиенты и сотрудники «Охотника», использовавшие патроны Denel PMP на охоте. Кроме того, мы провели тестовый отстрел в баллистический блок, результаты которого показаны на фотографиях: входное и выходное отверстия, блок в разрезе по ходу пули. Как видно, пуля не фрагментировалась. Отстрел проводился патроном PMP Standart, калибр 30-06, пуля SP 10,89г из карабина Merkel RX.Helix, с упора, дистанция 100м в закрытом тире.- Чистота патронов? Грязнят ли ствол? - Коротко можно ответить: грязнят не больше, чем другие импортные патроны. Это общее мнение сотрудников Группы компаний «Охотник». Однако оценка загрязненности оружия после стрельбы – дело субъективное. И у нас есть некоторая статистика таких субъективных мнений, полученная в ходе проведения акции «Тестируем вместе» в 2015 году от её участников. Всего было зафиксировано 30 оценок загрязненности после стрельбы патронами Denel PMP из оружия разных моделей: 15 оценок «Умеренно» и 15 оценок «Слабо». Заметим: никто из тестировавших патроны не посчитал загрязнение оружия сильным! Также нам приходилось слышать, что патрон Denel PMP называют «Чистюля» ? - Начальная скорость пули? Максимальный вес пули? - Эти данные отличаются в зависимости от калибра, типа пули, серии патронов… Смотрите таблицу технических характеристик патронов Denel PMP (скачать таблицу характеристик в формате Excel можно на сайте Группы компаний «Охотник»).Не магнитятся ли пули? - Нет, не магнитятся. Материалы, из которых изготовлены пули, - высококачественная медь и свинец. - Калибры для мелкой дичи \ средних трофеев \ крупных трофеев? Если разработаны в Южной Африке, не значит ли, что ориентация идет на крупных, толстокожих животных? - Конструкция пуль позволяет стрелять любой тип животных в соответствии с выбранным калибром. Нам известно множество случаев успешного применения патронов Denel PMP на охоте по копытным в России и Белоруссии, по медведю в разных регионах. - Насколько пуля теряет массу при проходе через тело и как сминается? - Возможны микроизменения массы пули, сминается в виде гриба. Для наглядности приведём описание конкретной охоты с патронами Denel PMP, пуля ProAmm, 11,66 грамма, карабин Merkel RX.Helix, калибр .308 Win.Mag. и фото извлечённых из трофеев пуль. «Следующими трофеями стали кабаны. С ними было все просто. Поскольку они добывались с вышки на дистанции до 100 метров, то падали как подкошенные при попадании по месту. Ни одна пуля не осталась в теле зверя. Все они проходили насквозь, поскольку кабаны не превышали 120 килограммов. Раневые каналы имели приемлемые гематомы, что подтверждало сохранение целостности пули при прохождении тела зверя. Мне хотелось увидеть, как раскрывается пуля, и какую она имеет форму после экспансии. Для этого нужен был серьёзный трофей, такой, как хороший лось, и я ждал открытия охоты на реву, одной из моих самых любимых. Я надеялся в очередной раз перехитрить матерого быка, приманив его звуками лосихи, и «обкатать» новый для себя патрон. Не буду описывать подробности этой охоты, а остановлюсь лишь на факте, что лося я добыл. Это был хороший бык с 13 отростками, массой более 500 килограммов. Дистанция стрельбы была 8 метров строго в бок по лопатке сохатого. Пуля классически прошла почти весь корпус лося, пробив две лопатки и легкие, и застряла под кожей с противоположной стороны. После извлечения пули я отметил хорошую раскрываемость - пуля приняла форму гриба и при этом сохранила свою массу. Лось по инерции пролетел после попадания 10 метров и рухнул замертво. Дальше была охота уже с собаками, и я добыл с использованием патронов РМР средних размеров быка и молодую корову. В обоих случаях патрон отработал «на отлично». Извлеченные пули были как близнецы - в форме гриба и с неизменной массой. Раневые гематомы - приемлемые для этого калибра. Daňčí plátky s restovanou paprikou 800 g daňčí kýty bez kosti, 1 zelená a 1 žlutá masitá paprika, 1 šalotka, 2 stroužky česneku, 300 ml zvěřinového vývaru, 100 ml smetany na šlehání, 2 lžíce másla, 2 lžíce olivového oleje, 2 lžíce hladké mouky, lžíce krystalového cukru, lžíce balzamikového octa, směs jemně mletého koření na zvěřinu, sůl Odblaněnou daňčí kýtu nakrájíme na silnější plátky, přes fólii naklepeme, posypeme kořením, osolíme a odložíme stranou. Ve velké hluboké pánvi rozehřejeme olej, vložíme okořeněné plátky, opékáme z každé strany asi 2 až 3 minuty a odložíme je stranou. Do pánve přidáme lžíci másla, vsypeme na plátky nakrájenou šalotku, nadrobno nakrájený česnek a na proužky nakrájenou papriku a restujeme asi 2 až 3 minuty, až paprika změkne. Orestovanou papriku odložíme stranou a udržujeme ji teplou. Do pánve přidáme lžíci másla, vsypeme mouku a připravíme světlou jíšku. Poté zašleháme cukr a balzamikový ocet a necháme ocet krátce odpařit. Zalijeme vývarem, prošleháme a asi 10 minut povaříme. Nakonec vlijeme smetanu a krátce povaříme. Dochutíme cukrem a solí. Do omáčky vrátíme odložené plátky a v omáčce je krátce prohřejeme. Daňčí plátky podáváme s restovanou paprikou, vhodnou přílohou je bramborová kaše.
