THE GREATEST BOWHUNTER I EVER KNEW was born 121 years ago today. We shook hands for the first time in 1972 at the Pope and Young Club Convention and Awards Banquet in Denver, and our paths crossed frequently thereafter until his death in 1988. And like millions of other archers and bowhunters of that era, I was a big Fred Bear fan and longtime supporter of the legendary man in the Borsalino hat. Special personal memories include visits to the Bear Archery plant and Fred Bear Museum in Grayling, Michigan, before the company's production facility relocated to Florida; the annual Anderson Archery clinics and seminar stage we shared each June in front of large and appreciative crowds in Grand Ledge; and his final appearance at the P&Y gathering in Tulsa when we said our goodbyes one last time the year before his passing. Still, I'm eternally thankful that I could work with Pope and Young founder Glenn St. Charles, Papa Bear, and other club officers as Editor of the very first P&Y record book, published in 1975 with Fred's financial assistance. I also give thanks for eventually being elected President of the P&Y Club and in 2003 voted into the Archery Hall of Fame where true giants of the sport -- including Fred Bear and Glenn St. Charles and Howard Hill -- were enshrined for their roles in sparking the worldwide growth of 20th Century archery/bowhunting. My biggest regret was I never accepted Fred's invitation to join him and other friends at his Grousehaven deer hunting camp in central Michigan. My work as BOWHUNTER Magazine Editor/Founder had always seemed to get in the way, and I could rationalize there was always next year -- until there wasn't. Regardless, I feel eternally blessed to have played an active role in documenting a great sport that has had millions of participants and remains popular with men, women, boys, and girls across much of our 21st Century world. To have known Papa Bear, Glenn St. Charles, Jim Dougherty, Earl and Ann Hoyt, Gail Martin, Tom Jennings, and Bill Wadsworth was a pleasure. And to have spread the gospel beside my BOWHUNTER contemporaries -- Fred Asbell, Dwight Schuh, Chuck Adams, Dr. Dave Samuel, and Len Cardinale --has been a true privilege. #

Mozambique Its topography consists of thick forests, swamplands and palm forests. Earlier wildlife was heavily poached thus resulting in a dwindling population of animals. However, the initiative of the government in working with locals in promoting sustained hunting has revived Mozambique’s hunting industry. One can claim the Lion, Leopard, Cape Buffalo and Elephant as trophies from their hunting expeditions. Other unusual game trophies such as Kudu, Chobe bushbuck, Nyala, Eland and Crocodile are also hunted in Mozambique.

Fishing in Latvia Fishing for food has been a topical activity since the beginning of humankind. However, even today it has not lost its influence and significance. It is a great way to be alone with nature or to spend time with family or like-minded people. The diversity of nature offers the opportunity for a chilled family holiday by the sea, river or lake, and allows a passionate fisherman's dream of a big catch to be fulfilled. There are many different fish species in Latvian waters, and none of them are poisonous or dangerous to health. The most popular of these are pike, pike-perch, trout, carp, tench, perch, vimba, roach, bream, flounder and smelt, but the biggest pride of a fisherman is catching salmon or sea trout. Several fish species spend most of their lives at sea, only arriving in rivers during spawning, but some of these fish live and spawn in Latvia's rivers and lakes. Ezers un laivas Fishing in lakes Latvia is rich in a variety of beautiful lakes, which are home to various species of fish and aquatic plants. Catching fish in the lake can be a challenge, but if one succeeds, satisfaction is guaranteed! Lake Usma Lake Usma is one of the largest lakes in Latvia - it has seven islands and Moricsala Nature Reserve. Lake Usma is home to more than 25 species of fish, and this lake brings together fishing enthusiasts from all over Latvia. The most popular fish are perch, roach and bream, but you can also catch zander, pike or eel. On the website of Lake Usma you can get acquainted with the descriptions and visualisations of all these fish. There are many campsites and recreation bases in the vicinity of Lake Usma; it is possible to go on a bike ride around the lake, as well as climb Ūdru Hill to view the surroundings of the lake from the 26-metre high tower. Lake Alūksne Lake Alūksne is located in a hilly place, which allows you to view the lake from its steep shores. There are four islands in the lake, and this body of water is home to fish such as pike, perch, crucian carp, carp, tench and other fish. Lake Alūksne is rich in fish, and it gathers like-minded people in all seasons. There are several accommodation places around the lake, where it is also possible to rent boats, go to the sauna after fishing or prepare a delicious fish soup on the fire. We recommend supplementing the visit to the Alūksne side with a leisurely walk through the park of Alūksne manor, which is an architectural monument of national significance and will surprise you with various small architectural forms, monuments and fountains. Of course, with a beautiful view of the lake! Lake Kāls Lake Kāla is located in Vestiena Parish, Madona region, and it is very scenic and picturesque. There are several recreation areas around the lake, which will allow you to enjoy fishing for several days. It is also possible to rent boats, catamarans, water tricycles, SUP boards in these recreation areas, but you will get a special fishing experience if you rent a raft - it can carry up to 12 people at the same time. Lake Kāla is also known for its magical cultural and artistic event “Sounds of the Lake”, where several thousand people in boats are waiting for a sunrise accompanied by live music playing in the middle of the lake, on a floating stage. Lake Rāzna If we talk about lakes, we must not forget the “land of blue lakes” - Latgale! There you will find more than 1,200 lakes and small lakes, various campsites and recreation areas. The largest lake in terms of water volume, called the Latgale Sea, is Lake Rāzna. 26 species of fish have been observed here, and recreation by this lake includes not only fishing, but also a variety of other recreational activities. For example, here it is possible to go on a yacht trip, explore nature with the family in the educational centre “Rāzna”, as well as go to the recreation park “Čīkurs”, where various active recreation offers are available for the whole family. Ezers Fishing in paid fish ponds It is also possible to go fishing in privately created paid ponds - it will most likely be a little easier and faster to catch something there! Many go to commercial ponds for “sport” instead of fish for consumption, following the “catch and release” principle. Alberta dīķi (Alberta ponds) Only 5 kilometers from the border of Riga there is an opportunity to fish and relax in nature - in Alberta ponds! There is a carp and a crucian carp pond, as well as a reservoir for pike, tench, perch and roach. It is also possible to go ice fishing here in winter. The recreation place “Alberta dīķi” is designed for a great rest; there are houses of different sizes and configurations to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, prepare a delicious meal on the grill or campfire and take a breath. Draudziņu dīķis (Draudziņu pond) Draudziņi pond in Cēre Parish, Kandava region, is a place to go for big catches - according to the owners of the pond, there is almost no small carp! It should be noted that this pond has a “catch and release” policy that allows carp to grow bigger and bigger. On the other hand, if you want to catch a fish and devour it, then there is also a pike pond, where you can catch fish without any size or weight restrictions. There is also a guest house with a large terrace on the water by the Draudzini pond, which will allow you to relax with a wider circle of family or friends. Berga dīķi (Berga ponds) Berga ponds have been set up on the Jelgava side, where it is possible not only to catch carp, but also crucian carp, tench, pike and other fish. Here you will find seven different ponds, and one of the carp ponds is designed for a real challenge - to catch the big fish, but then release it back into the pond. At these ponds you can spend the night in tents, prepare a meal outdoors, as well as rent a hot tub to enjoy the closeness of nature, peace and great company. Kvāpānu dīķi (Kvāpāni ponds) In Latgale, on the shores of Lake Lubāna, a water tourism development centre “Bāka” has been established, which gathers not only anglers but also enthusiasts of active recreation and bird watchers. The nearby nature reserve “Lubāna Wetland” is a place that is important for the conservation of protected species and habitats, while Lubāns and fish ponds are one of the most important resting and feeding places for migratory waterfowl in Latvia. Three bird-watching towers have been built on the dams of Kvāpāni ponds, which will be an interesting and exploratory activity. This pond complex consists of six ponds surrounded by dams, and a permit to fish here must be purchased in the centre “Baka”, where it is also possible to spend the night and also actively spend the days here. Sea fishing Although fishing is more often associated with lakes, rivers and ponds, in recent years there has been a trend towards fishing at sea - a new challenge, new conditions and experiences. The settlements along the sea coast usually have a good tourist infrastructure (guest houses, cafes, information points, leisure and entertainment offers, shops, public transport), but there are places where there are kilometers of unspoiled sea shore. In autumn and spring, flounder and halibut can be fished in the sea, salmon and sea trout can be fished from the boat, garfish are caught for a couple of weeks in the second half of May, and herring is caught well at the beginning of summer. Every year a festival of fishing from the seashore takes place in Jūrkalne, where teams fight for the biggest catch. Whether you choose to go in the direction of a lake or relax in commercially created ponds, it is important to take care of clothing that is suitable for outdoor recreation. Before you go, don't forget to check the permits and licences required for fishing.

5 SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT ELK ANTLERS 1. ELK ANTLER RETENTION IS TESTOSTERONE-DRIVEN Elk antlers begin to form immediately after the last set is shed. Because elk antler grows faster than any other tissue in its body, a healthy bull can grow nearly one inch of antler every single day, leaving them with a fully formed set of antlers within the next few months. In many cases, disputes with predators or other bulls will cause these antlers to break off, but they’ll actually shed on their own if left undamaged. Why? Because an elk’s ability to retain its antlers is driven by its testosterone levels. After mating season ends, the level of doe pheromones in the air decreases, causing bull testosterone to drop as well. Once a bull loses enough testosterone, its body will pick up on the change and begin to shed its antlers in response. 2. DIFFERENT ELK POPULATIONS HAVE UNIQUE ANTLERS There are many subspecies of elk, and at least six variants live in North America. Over time and multiple generations, elk adapt to their local environment through marked changes in behavior and appearance, and these changes can affect their antlers. Consequently, different populations of elk bear unique antler shapes and sizes. For example, Rocky Mountain elk have the largest antlers of all known elk subspecies! 3. FEMALE ELK FAVOR BULLS WITH MORE ANTLER POINTS Who knew that elk could count? Scientists researching the mating habits of elk have observed that females heavily favor suitors with the most antler points. This may be because doe are instinctually driven toward males with the highest levels of testosterone to ensure that their young grow up to be as strong and healthy as possible. 4. DOGS LOVE THEM It’s no secret that dogs love to chomp on things. Regrettably, many of our four-legged friends are so good at chewing that they bite through a majority of toys and chews within a few days. That’s why they love gnashing away at elk antlers for dogs. Elk antler chews are incredibly durable products that canines can’t resist, making them a fantastic tool to keep your pup entertained for countless hours while stimulating their inherent (and perfectly healthy) need to chew. 5. ANTLER MARROW ACTS AS A NATURAL TOOTHBRUSH Elk antler chews contain tasty, nutritious marrow (a soft substance found in the cavities of bones) that dogs adore. When your canine chews on this substance, it acts as a natural toothbrush that wipes away plaque, ensuring that his or her teeth stay healthy and clean. This makes antler chews a great boon for owners who want to give their canine a snack that’s delicious and good for their health.

Japan in Cherry Blossom Season While Japan is beautiful year-round, the few weeks each spring when cherry trees across the country explode with blossoms is a particularly pretty time to visit. Cherry blossoms usually bloom between mid-March and early May. In 2022, Tokyo's cherry blossom season officially began on March 20, when flowers opened on a Somei-Yoshino cherry tree at Yasukuni Shrine. While the dates change somewhat from year to year, there are areas in which cherry blossoms bloom even earlier!

Wetekom 4x32 Scope Review I recently had the opportunity to test out the Wetekom 4x32 scope, and I wanted to share my thoughts on its performance and overall value. Pros: Optical Clarity: One of the standout features of the Wetekom 4x32 scope is its optical clarity. The lenses provide a sharp, bright image with good color fidelity. Even in low light conditions, I found it easy to acquire targets, which is crucial for hunting or shooting at dawn or dusk. Compact Size: The scope's compact design makes it a fantastic choice for mounting on lightweight rifles. It doesn't add much bulk, which is a significant advantage for those who prefer a sleek and minimalistic setup. This is particularly beneficial for tactical or field situations where maneuverability is key. Ease of Use: The Wetekom 4x32 is user-friendly. The adjustments for elevation and windage are smooth and precise, allowing for quick and easy sighting in. It comes with clear markings that help in making adjustments without fussing around too much. Affordability: Priced competitively, the Wetekom 4x32 offers excellent value for money. For those just starting in shooting or hunting, this scope provides a great entry-level option without breaking the bank. Durability: The scope appears robust and well-constructed. It is designed to withstand challenging conditions, with a rugged body that feels solid in hand. I've taken it out in various weather conditions, and it has held up remarkably well. Cons: Limited Magnification: While the 4x magnification is suitable for many applications, it may not be sufficient for longer-range shooting. Experienced marksmen or those who frequently shoot at extended distances might find themselves needing more power. Eye Relief: Although the eye relief is decent, I noticed it could be a bit tight for more powerful caliber rifles. Shooters using heavier calibers may find themselves needing to adjust their position often to avoid any uncomfortable recoil. Basic Features: Compared to more premium scopes, the Wetekom 4x32 lacks some advanced features like illuminated reticles or parallax adjustment. This might not be an issue for beginners, but seasoned shooters might miss these functionalities. Mounting Issues: I experienced some difficulties with the scope mounts. While they weren't terrible, I had to spend some extra time to ensure everything was aligned correctly, which could be a downside for those who prefer a straightforward setup. Conclusion: The Wetekom 4x32 scope stands out as an excellent option for beginners and those seeking an affordable yet reliable scope for short to medium-range shooting. With its optical clarity, compact design, and user-friendly features, it offers great value for the price. However, experienced shooters who require higher magnification or advanced features might want to explore other options. #Wetekom #ScopeReview #4x32Scope #ShootingEquipment #HuntingScopes #OpticsReview #AffordableScopes #ShootingSports #BeginnerSco

Hardware: Leupold RX-FullDraw 5 Rangefinder When it comes to glass, I’m a Leupold guy. I’ve come to trust the clarity and dependability of their optics, from scopes to binos to spotters, and they always perform brilliantly. Of course, rangefinders fall into the optic arena and are arguably one of the most crucial tools for firearm and archery hunters. Over the years, the rangefinder pocket on my bino harness has held multiple Leupold models like the RX-1600i TBR/W, RX-FullDraw 3 and RX-FullDraw 4. All performed as advertised, and I killed lots of critters using them. Leupold’s latest incarnation for archers, the RX-FullDraw 5, is the spitting image of the RX-4: compact, lightweight, durable, ergonomic and 6x magnification. The big difference, and one I was ready to dive headfirst into, is the new rangefinder’s Ballistic Mode. Before taking full advantage of the technology that makes this rangefinder one of the market’s most advanced and accurate bowhunting rangefinders, Leupold asks that you complete the following three tasks. First, use a chronograph to measure your arrow’s speed. Leupold’s instruction manual will tell you to record the velocity of your arrow at 36 inches of draw length. Don’t let this become a roadblock—simply shoot your standard draw length and record your arrow’s velocity. Second, use a digital arrow scale to measure your arrow’s total weight. Be sure to weigh the arrow with the broadhead you plan to use while hunting. Lastly, have your wife, kid, friend or whoever use a ruler or tape measure to record the vertical distance between your arrow shaft at full draw and the center of your peep sight. That’s it. Now it’s just a matter of punching in the numbers. Don’t let the setup process intimidate you. You don’t have to work at MIT to be able to use the RX-FullDraw 5. Press the Power button on top of the rangefinder’s body and then hold the Mode button on the rangefinder’s left side toward the front until you see “CALC” on the screen. Now press the power button again, which will scroll you through the various CALC settings until you reach the “BALL” (ballistic) setting. Select BALL by punching the Mode button again. You’ll see “VEL” (velocity) in the screen’s upper right corner. Use the Power button to set your arrow’s speed, and then press the Mode button to continue. You’ll now see “WGHT” (weight) on the screen’s upper right corner. Again, use the Power button to enter your arrow’s weight. Hit the Mode button, and then plug in your peep height. It’s that simple. The most tech-challenged person in the world can set up this rangefinder. Of course, Leupold thought of everything, and you can adjust display brightness, unit of measurement, crosshair display, etc. The rangefinder walks you through each process. Leupold dubs the next important choice as Flightpath technology. You have two options. The default 20-yard mode shows an illuminated mark, or tick, as Leupold dubs it, indicating the max height of your arrow flight at a 20-yard target. I like this mode; it tells me that if I see any obstructions below the tick mark, I will have arrow interference. The second mode is Mid Mode. When using this mode, the illuminated tick mark represents the highest point of flight along the arrow’s entire path, usually halfway between you and your target. It’s a matter of personal preference, but I tell you without hesitation that the default mode simplifies things.

Gabon Forest Hunting: The Ultimate Guide to a Hunter's Paradise Gabon, a Central African nation covered in dense rainforest, presents a unique and challenging hunting experience. Unlike the savanna hunts of East Africa, Gabon demands different skills and strategies. This guide provides essential information for hunters considering Gabon as their next destination. Game Species in Gabon's Forests: Gabon's forests are home to a variety of elusive game species. Here's a rundown of the most sought-after targets: Sitatunga: A semi-aquatic antelope perfectly adapted to swampy forests. Primarily hunted around lagoons and waterways. Forest Buffalo (Dwarf Buffalo): Smaller and darker than its savanna cousin. Known for being aggressive and challenging to hunt. Red River Hog: A colorful and striking wild pig. Often hunted near agricultural areas bordering the forest. Various Duiker Species: Several duiker species inhabit the forests of Gabon, including the Peters' duiker, black-fronted duiker, and blue duiker. Forest Elephant: While hunting them is prohibited, it is essential to be aware of their presence. Hunting Seasons in Gabon: The dry season, from June to September, is generally considered the best time for hunting in Gabon. During this period, visibility improves as vegetation thins, and animals tend to congregate around remaining water sources. The rainy season (October to May) makes access difficult, and the dense foliage reduces visibility significantly. Hunting Methods and Weaponry: Due to the thick vegetation, hunting in Gabon typically involves: Tracking: Following animal trails and spoor. A skilled tracker is essential. Stalking: Moving slowly and quietly through the forest, using cover to approach your quarry. Stands: Using elevated platforms or ground blinds near known animal crossings or feeding areas. Recommended Firearms: Rifles: A bolt-action rifle in a caliber such as .375 H&H Magnum, .30-06 Springfield, or 9.3x62 Mauser is suitable for most game species. Ensure you use high-quality ammunition with controlled expansion bullets. Shotguns: A 12-gauge shotgun with slugs can be effective for close-range encounters with forest buffalo or Red River hogs. Essential Gear: Durable Hunting Boots: Waterproof and with good ankle support. Lightweight, Moisture-Wicking Clothing: The humidity can be intense. Rain Gear: Even in the dry season, rain is possible. Binoculars: High-quality optics are crucial for spotting game in the dense forest. GPS and Compass: Navigating the forest can be disorienting. First-Aid Kit: Including medications for malaria and other tropical diseases. Insect Repellent: Essential for protection against mosquitoes and other biting insects. Headlamp or Flashlight: For navigating in the dark. Prime Hunting Locations: Hunting concessions are typically located in the interior of Gabon, away from major population centers. Some well-known areas include: The areas near the Ogooué River: This is the main river in Gabon. Reserves: Some reserves near Ivindo National Park. South Gabon near the border with Congo: Concessions can be found that border on the Republic of Congo. Hunting Costs in Gabon: Hunting in Gabon is expensive. Expect to pay: Daily Rates: Ranging from 2,000+ per day, depending on the outfitter and the game being hunted. Trophy Fees: Substantial fees are charged for each animal harvested. These can range from several thousand dollars for a Sitatunga to tens of thousands for an elephant (in countries where it is permitted). Package Deals: Some outfitters offer package deals that include daily rates, trophy fees for specific animals, and accommodation. Additional Costs: Include airfare, visa fees, gun permits, accommodation before and after the hunt, and taxidermy/shipping of trophies. Trophy Handling and Export: After a successful hunt, your outfitter will handle the initial preparation of your trophies. Ensure you understand the export regulations for Gabon and your home country. A professional taxidermist can assist with the necessary paperwork and shipping arrangements. Important Considerations: Physical Fitness: Hunting in Gabon's forests is physically demanding. Be prepared for long days of walking in hot, humid conditions. Malaria Prevention: Gabon is a high-risk malaria area. Take appropriate prophylactic medications. Language: French is the official language of Gabon. While some outfitters may speak English, learning a few basic French phrases is helpful. Reputable Outfitters: Choose a reputable outfitter with experience hunting in Gabon. Research their track record and ask for references. Firearm Regulations: Be sure to check current regulations before you go to avoid any problems upon arrival. Conclusion: Hunting in Gabon offers a thrilling and unique experience for the adventurous hunter. With careful planning and preparation, you can embark on an unforgettable journey into the heart of Africa's rainforest. Remember to respect the environment, adhere to all hunting regulations, and prioritize safety. #gabon #hunting #africa https://m.uh.app/news/leopard-hunting-in-cameroon-a-hunters-guide-this-article-provides-a_-LDTcPa7Ee-eLTdL3BmiLA

Bowhunting (or bow hunting) is the practice of hunting game animals by archery. Many indigenous peoples have employed the technique as their primary hunting method for thousands of years, and it has survived into contemporary use for sport and hunting. Arrows, bows and sights are commonly of the more modern varieties. However, all effective variations, including crossbows and wooden bows launching wooden arrows with stone points, are used. Arrowheads are chosen to ensure lethality. Broadheads feature blades that jut out from the shaft at an angle to cause more damage to the target; some models have retractable blades that only deploy once they hit the target.

Hour-to-Hour Elk Hunting Tactics. Elk hunting differs from a traditional whitetail hunt in many ways. Elevation, rugged terrain and extraction adversities separate the two, just to name a handful of complicating distinctions. Another difference is the fact elk keep a schedule that offers hunting opportunities throughout the day, whereas whitetails may shut down. Focus on meeting locations that vary by the hour to engage your leggy quarry instead of napping under an old pine tree. 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. If I had to rate one period as the Holy Grail, it would be dawn through midmorning. Elk seem to be anxious, agitated and goal-oriented. That equals noise, and noisy elk are easy to track. The "anxious" issue arises from elk being exposed at sunrise to potential hunting pressure. They are anxious to move to private digs most hunters will be pressed to reach. Herd bulls are anxious to keep the harem together while moving through a barrage of tag-along satellite bulls. What is the goal? By midmorning elk want to be high on a north face, across a major canyon and buried in thick pines or junipers. The mad dash ensures sanctuary and relief from any day's sporting searing sunshine. Although your targeted herd may be easy to track via vocalizations, starting with elk at a lower level could be a regrettable mistake. Elk are cruisers; the name implies long-legged, built for rapid and sustained escape. In brief, they can cover real estate faster than you. You may be able to keep up in some topography, but in true mountain settings, elk use elevation gain to their advantage, and that leaves you gasping in the thin air. A solid plan includes scouting for potential elk hangouts. Instead of starting with elk at ground zero, stage yourself on north slopes and densely covered highlands where you expect elk to park for daytime sanctuary. Use their calls to maneuver into position, keeping in mind thermals typically carry your scent downward. Negotiate in close for ambush or calling opportunities. Now is a good time to sound like a lost cow or an irritating satellite. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. From midmorning through midafternoon, elk could be engaged in a variety of activities. As ruminants, elk need a timeout to digest their food through regurgitation and repeated chewing. This act and the need for rest equates to nap time during this period. As elk decide where to bed with herd mentality, expect restlessness, prodding by the herd bull and satellites hellbent on grabbing some action before nap time commences. This forest disarray provides you yet another opportunity to edge close for a shot as elk eyes divert to pre-bedding commotion. Bulls busy prodding satellites out of the herd may give you the exact opening to release a shrill scream in defiance. Get ready. A bull could bulldozer past you in seconds looking for the irritant. At some point and quite suddenly, the woods will go quiet as elk settle for a few hours. You may want to join their napping habit, but do so in a strategic location. A top pick is right there on the edge of the herd. If the wind allows and you can see or sense you are within a short hike of the herd, hold your position. As cows come into estrus, an unsettled herd bull could prod a cow from her bed any time during this period for a brief chase. Have an arrow safely nocked on your bow beside you as you recharge. A strategically placed decoy could make a bull pause during the shuffle, giving you the window to shoot. Another high-ranking option is to retreat slightly to any nearby water, especially one with signs of recent wallowing. It is not uncommon for a herd bull or satellite to slip away from the ladies to rehydrate and reapply a layer of urine-soaked mud for afternoon cologne. Build a homemade hide downwind and catch a wink while waiting.

Yukon Phantom RT 6x50 Digital Scope Review I recently had the opportunity to use the Yukon Phantom RT 6x50 digital scope for my nighttime hunting sessions, and I wanted to share my honest thoughts about it. As with any piece of technology, it has its strengths and weaknesses, which I will outline below. Pros: Image Quality: The image clarity at night is impressive. The 6x magnification combined with a 50mm objective lens allows for bright, clear images even in low-light conditions. I was able to spot game from a considerable distance without straining my eyes. User-Friendly Interface: The digital display is intuitive and easy to navigate. I appreciated the quick access to various settings, which makes adjustments on-the-go simple and convenient. It didn’t take long to familiarize myself with the scope's features. Durability: The construction of the Yukon Phantom RT is solid. It feels robust and well-built, which gives me confidence it can withstand the rigors of outdoor use. It is also weather-resistant, making it suitable for various environmental conditions. Battery Life: With my usage, I found the battery life to be decent. I was able to use it over several nights without needing a recharge, which is important for extended hunting trips. Additional Features: The scope offers a variety of features, including video output and recording capabilities. This is a fantastic addition for those looking to document their hunting experiences or conduct analysis later on. Cons: Weight: One downside I noticed is the weight of the scope. It’s a bit heavier than traditional scopes, which can be a drawback for prolonged use. After a few hours, I felt the strain on my rifle setup, especially during long treks. Price Point: The Yukon Phantom RT is on the pricier side compared to other digital scopes. For some users, this may deter them from making the investment, especially if they are unsure about using digital optics. Learning Curve: While I found the interface generally user-friendly, there is still a learning curve associated with digital scopes. Some hunters may prefer the simplicity of traditional optics and may not want to deal with the added complexity of digital features. Illumination Options: While the scope performed well in limited light, I found that the brightness control could sometimes be too bright, making it difficult to maintain night vision under certain circumstances. Limited Zoom Range: Although the 6x magnification is sufficient for most hunting scenarios, for those who prefer longer-range shots, it might feel limiting. I would recommend it primarily for shorter to mid-range applications. Conclusion: Overall, the Yukon Phantom RT 6x50 digital scope is a solid choice for those who value image quality and durability in nighttime conditions. Its user-friendly features make it appealing, but its weight and price may be considerations for some. #YukonPhantomRT #DigitalScope #NightHunting #HuntingEquipment

B.C. First Nations hope to protect Spirit bears with ban on black bear hunting A ban on black bear hunting in parts of the Great Bear Rainforest has the Kitasoo Xai'xais, and Gitga'at Nations hopeful a revitalization of the species will develop, a July 19 announcement stated. The Ministry of Forests announced a year-round black bear hunting closure from July 1, 2022, to June 20, 2024, in 8,158 square kilometres of Great Bear Rainforest between Prince Rupert and Bella Coola. Black bears are culturally significant, and the species includes Kermode bears or Spirit bears. In the Gitga'at language they are known as Moksgm'ol and hold traditional and economic significance to the Kitasoo Xai'xais and Gitga'at First Nations. Spirit bears are black bears with a rare genetic mutation that turns their coat white. Around one in ten black bears have distinct white fur in these two Nations' territories, which has the highest global prevalence of the animal. In the Kitasoo Xai'xais and Gitga'at territories, it was previously believed there were as many as 400 Spirit bears, Christina Service, a wildlife biologist with the Kitasoo Xai'xais Stewardship Authority stated. However, current research, which is still in progress, shows the number might be an overestimate. Research shows the gene that gives rise to the unusual white coat is 50 per cent rarer than was first assumed. While it is illegal in B.C. to hunt Spirit bears, the stewardship groups from the Nations were calling for a ban on black bear hunting within portions of their territories. The premise behind this is black bears can be carrying the Spirit bear DNA, which cannot be identified just by looking at the bear. Kitasoo Xai'xais Stewardship Authority and the Gitga'at Ocean and Lands Development submitted a proposal to the provincial government before the new hunting regulations were announced. “Every time you shoot a black bear in this region, it could be carrying the recessive copy of the gene that produces the Spirit bear,” Doug Neasloss, chief councillor of the Kitasoo Xai'xais First Nation said. “This hunting closure is a monumental occasion and a big step towards protecting these spirit bears that are so important culturally and economically to the region.” Spirit bears are featured in First Nations' stories, songs and dances. They are also an important economic asset to remote communities through tourism. Each Nation has its own eco-tourism operator in the Great Bear Rainforest bringing visitors to see the unusual white-coat black bears. The Nations receive far more revenue from bear sightings than bear hunting in the area, stated the Kitasoo Xai'xais Stewardship Authority. “We see the hunting ban as an encouraging example of government-to-government collaboration and look forward to continuing to work with the Fish and Wildlife Branch on other regulation changes in the future,” Neasloss said.

ORSIS SE LR Hunter (Royal Jacanda) Rifle in .30-06 Springfield Review I recently had the opportunity to test the ORSIS SE LR Hunter in its stunning Royal Jacanda modification, chambered in .30-06 Springfield. As an enthusiast of precision rifles, I was excited to see how this model would perform, and I was generally impressed. First and foremost, the aesthetic appeal of the Royal Jacanda wood stock is remarkable. The rich color and intricate grain patterns provide a unique and elegant look that sets it apart from many other rifles on the market. It’s clear that a lot of care went into the craftsmanship here, making it a pleasure to handle and admire. In terms of performance, the .30-06 Springfield caliber delivers excellent power and versatility, suitable for a wide range of hunting scenarios. During my time at the range, I appreciated the rifle's balance and ergonomic design. The weight distribution made it easy to aim and stabilize, which is essential for accurate shooting over varying distances. The action of the ORSIS SE LR Hunter is smooth and reliable, with a crisp trigger pull that enhances overall shooting experience. Whether I was firing offhand or from a rest, I found that I could achieve tight groupings with minimal effort, thanks in part to the rifle's solid construction and quality components. However, I did notice that the rifle could feel a bit heavy after extended periods of use, which might be a consideration for those planning long excursions in the field. Additionally, while the wood finish is attractive, it may require more maintenance compared to synthetic alternatives to prevent damage from the elements. Overall, the ORSIS SE LR Hunter (Royal Jacanda) in .30-06 Springfield is an exceptional rifle that combines beauty with performance. It excels in precision shooting and offers a tactile experience that many modern rifles can’t match. If you’re looking for a reliable hunting rifle that also stands out visually, this model is definitely worth considering. Just be prepared to carry a bit of weight on your next adventure! #ORSIS #SELRHunter #RoyalJacanda #RifleReview #30-06Springfield #PrecisionRifles #HuntingRifles #WoodStock #AestheticDesign #ErgonomicDesign #ShootingPerformance #AccurateShooting #SmoothAction #CrispTrigger #TightGroupings #HeavyRifle #HuntingExperience #GunCraftsmanship #ShootingRange #HuntingAdventure #QualityComponents #Maintenance #ReliableRifle #VisuallyAppealing
